Media News coverage for benefit concert
-
May 21, 2009
Dear Friends
Thanks for all of your wishes, prayers and support. We had great area news media converage during our DOC-UP benefit announcement. (Ch3,CH9, WDNN CH10, 104.5 radio, Daily Citizen)
If you did not have a chance to see the newschannel 9 6:00pm coverage the link is below. I thought the media really captured the spirit of hospitality, care and concern that we have for our neighbors that have been really hurt by this bad economy. We also made the front page of the Dalton Daily Citizen. A special thank you to everyone that could attend our media event.
Stay tuned for upcoming news about our CD release party in July! You will not want to miss hearing live, the Dalton song written by Kathy Reed of Atlanta just for this project to benefit DOC-UP.
Kind Regards
Paul

Celebrating Textile History
-
April 29, 2009
April 26, 2009 10:54 pm
— Submitted by Dalton Public Schools Brookwood School will host a community arts program Friday evening at 6:30
at the First Presbyterian Church in honor of Dalton’s rich textile history. Area residents are invited to attend as the school pays tribute to the history of Peacock Alley.
Among the highlights will be the presentation of “Simple Gifts”, a short performance featuring live dance and drama with recorded instrumental music by Paul Byrum and Friends. “Simple Gifts” is a tribute to Catherine Evans
Whitener, one of the women who gave birth to the textile industry in
Dalton. Students from Brookwood School will be performing, with local
resident Paula Hall cast in the adult role of Whitener.
The performance was conceived, choreographed and will be directed by Sandra Hughes, Brookwood School’s guest teaching artist and the artistic director of Gateway Performance Productions in Atlanta. Hughes was inspired by a talk Whitener gave to school children before the end of her life.
Whitener’s childhood fascination with and eventual creation of a
tufted bedspread during the 1890s at the age of 15 was a gift that eventually had great significance for our local community and the
entire world. The evening will include photographic images, spoken word
poetry and guitar accompaniment by local college student Mason Gavin in collaboration with Nicky Millwood.
In this tribute to Peacock Alley, Brookwood students will perform several
musical selections under the direction of music teacher Donna Townsend, and will hold a visual art and living history exhibit, led by art instructor
Renee Mahan and local resident Marsha Whitener.
In addition, the school is producing a video documentary in conjunction
with Charter Media, which features local historians and business leaders
discussing the entrepreneurial spirit of the community, past and present.
Selections from the video documentary will be aired at the event. A
Community Conversation segment also will be included, with textile families and historians available for discussion and a walk down Peacock Alley
memory lane.
Members of the Whitfield-Murray Historical Society will be present to
assist guests with the purchase of books, prints and other items of
historical interest, as well as provide membership opportunities to area
residents. Light refreshments will be served as guests tour the
multigenerational exhibit.
In sponsoring this school-community program, Brookwood School seeks to
encourage community collaboration and a sense of gratitude — gratitude for
the area in which we live, for the people here and for those who have gone
before us, and for our area’s unique history.
This program is being made possible in part by a grant from Alternate ROOTS
and the National Endowment for the Arts. Partnering organizations include
Brookwood School, Brookwood PTA, the city of Dalton, Charter Media, the
Creative Arts Guild, Peacock Alley Antiques, Tea Room and Gifts, and the
Whitfield-Murray Historical Society.
This event is free to the public, with donations being accepted for the
Whitfield-Murray Historical Society. Please join Brookwood School on
Friday, May 1, at 6:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in this
tribute to our community.
